Who We Are

ESR is a non-profit Community Action Agency (CAA). Our mission is to empower social and economic self-reliance for the working low-income and homeless.

OUR HISTORY

In 1964, the United States declared war on an issue that has plagued our country for centuries. Under Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency, initiatives came alive to eliminate poverty amongst individuals and families across our nation. Thus, CAAs were born with the mission of helping people help themselves. In 1964, ESR became one of the first CAAs in the United States and one of 34 in North Carolina. For over 55 years, ESR has provided services to people in our community with low to moderate-income who are seeking self-sufficiency. Our earlier programs included transportation, music, congregate meals, and Head Start. As the needs of the community changed, our programs did as well, but still continue to focus on empowering people to become self-reliant.

What We Do

ESR helps eliminate barriers to self-sufficiency for individuals and families with low-moderate income by helping clients obtain safe and affordable housing, increase their level of education, learn skills to help them budget and navigate their finances, become a first-time homeowner, improve their small business, locate reliable childcare, receive free tax preparation, and more.
